The monotony of long sea voyages was broken every Sunday by church services, such as this one on the Pegasus in 1865. They were given by any clergy who happened to be on board, or by the ship’s captain or surgeon. Sometimes cabin and steerage passengers came together to worship. On other ships, class distinctions persisted, and a service in the cabin for cabin passengers was followed by a service on deck, or below deck, for steerage passengers.
