Intrepid Caroline Chevalier, who like her husband Nicholas Chevalier was an artist, joined him on travels around the West Coast of the South Island in 1866. This sketch by Nicholas shows the difficulties they experienced; Caroline descends a steep track with her long skirts tucked up, using a stick to prevent herself from sliding.

We are overjoyed to find this sketch & entry. We believe our ancestor George Alloway almost certainly travelled from Abe's Gully (Taramakau area) to the Ashley Gorge/Rangiora area C1866 by this route.
